Sunday
Using an innovative, fast and simple foundation technique, students will piece eleven 3″ x 12″ strips from a wide variety of their scraps. The technique makes use of scraps as small as 1″ square, and the more scraps you use, the better it looks! Students will then prep and cut two different colorways of ombre fabric and use the scrap strips to painlessly piece a day/night ocean scape.
The day scape uses yellows, corals, oranges and a bit of pink to piece a 6 1/2″ circle representing the sun. This circle will be inset into an ombre fabric that represents the sky. Narrow scrap strips will be pieced into darker strips of this ombre to resemble a reflection of the sun on a calm sea. The night scape uses the same technique to piece either a smaller circle to represent the full moon or a crescent shape to represent the waning moon out of blues, grays, and tans.
The ombre used is Gelato Ombre by Maywood Studio, which will be provided in the student kit. The circle(s) and crescent are inset using a simple and pinless freezer paper method.
Kit fee covers background fabrics, freezer paper, washable glue stick and crumb scrap foundation paper. Students will provide as many scraps as they can in their desired color families. Joan will facilitate this in a series of weekly emails before class. Pre-class prep is minimal but very important; students must press all of their scraps with Niagara Heavy Spray Starch before class day.
